The scoring method using IMPs is called "Butler", and IMPs stands for International Match Points.
You often see IMP scales on F2F score cards.
The scores from all the tables except the best NS score and the best EW score are taken and the average is worked out. This becomes what is called the "Datum".
The system then works out the difference between the score at your table and the datum and converts it into IMPs.
Almost all teams events are scored with IMPs.
The late Sir Gary wrote a feature on the difference between playing MP and IMP events and you will find it on our Home Page > Information > Library > Members Articles and then click IMPS or MPS by Sir Gary
